Easter marks the start of the serious growing season for many gardeners. Indoor sown seeds are well into their growth now, whilst many crops can be sown directly into the ground – just watch out for the inevitable ‘April Showers’. Here are our top tips for April
- Dig a layer of compost into your beds
- Plant chitted potatoes outside
- Plant out strawberry beds
- Protect your plants from late frost
- Invest in some raised beds/planters to take the bending out of growing
- Mow the lawn regularly and recut lawn edges to straighten them up
- Use an aerator to get to the compacted areas of the lawn
- Look out for signs of pests and diseases – early prevention is easier than curing the infestation
- Water butts are a worthwhile investment for the season ahead
- Keep your weeds under control – check under the cloches too!
- Support peas sown last autumn or earlier this year
