Stainless steel is well known for its durability and resistance to rust and corrosion. This makes it a perfect material for spade heads as they are constantly exposed to soil, water, and other elements in the garden.
Not only that, but it’s a tough and strong material, and the sharp edge of the spade head makes it a lot easier to break through the soil.
They are. Burgon & Ball uses stainless steel for their spade heads, so you can use them in damp or wet soils without worrying about rust forming and damaging the tool.
That being said, it’s still important you clean the surface of your spade after using it rather than letting the soil fester. A simple hose and dry-off will do.
Both can be used for digging and moving, but each has different purposes. A spade is best for cutting into compacted soil and removing weeds. It’ll also work well in particularly tough soil. You can use a hand-held, smaller spade for lighter jobs.
A shovel is good for moving large amounts of loose material. You can also use a small shovel, perhaps handheld, for smaller jobs.
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and have your shoulders and hips facing towards your spade. Keeping the spade vertical and held with both hands, use your foot to push the blade into the ground.
