Things To Do In The Garden This Month – February!
The nights are starting to pull out and it feels like spring is finally on its way! Now is the time to get started on those garden projects, so you’ll be well prepared when the good weather arrives.
Clean Out Your Pond
If you’re lucky enough to have a pond in your garden, February is the perfect time to give it a clean out and remove any leaves and debris which may have fallen/blown into it (provided it’s not frozen of course!). Make sure you trim back any surrounding plants first and once you have it nice and clear, why not use some garden netting to keep it clear in future.
Protect Early Fruit Blossom
If you have fruit trees growing against a wall or in a very sheltered spot, they may blossom very early. If this happens, make sure you protect them with a layer of garden fleece or fleece plant covers.
Order Your Seed Potatoes And Onion Sets
Make sure you get in early at the garden centre buying your seed potatoes and onion sets as they can often get damaged with handling - or overheat and go soft on the shelf. Before you plant your potatoes, chit them to get them off to a good start. To do this, stand the potatoes with their blunt ends uppermost (this end will have ‘eyes’ on it) in trays or old egg boxes, in a cool place with plenty of natural light.
Cut Back Old Growth On Perennials
Cut back your perennials now, before they start to grow, to maximise healthy new shoots. Doing it at this time of year means you can get in close without doing damage to plants – make sure you use a good sharp pair of secateurs to get clean cuts.
Get Weeding
Get on top of the weeds now before they have a chance to get established. Also, make sure you take weeds to the dump or burn them in a garden incinerator – don’t chuck them in the compost or you will be storing up trouble!
Have A Spring Clean
If your shed and greenhouse are still in a mess from last year, take the time to have a clear up. Use warm soapy water to wash out your greenhouse, cold frames, garden pots and trays.
Mulch Your Garden Beds
When your bulbs are coming through, you will help them by carefully adding a layer of organic matter to the soil. Make sure you weed thoroughly before you put on any mulch though or you will just be feeding the weeds!
